We don't care about the young folks... [14 Jun 2007|03:06am]
I woke up early, then passed out on the couch again.
Before lunch I heard the new version of "Young Folks" that Kanye released. Not necessarily my favorite version of the song (Peter Bjorn and John 's version stole my heart at the first whistled tone)but the title of the song at least set the tone for the rest of my afternoon.
I love my family dearly, but sit me at a table of two Baby Boomers and two grumpy of 70something year olds and I may just go crazy. So many complaints about joints, what kids today are like, and most of the stories told by the two eldest at the table tended to have phrases like "Now that was before the war, ya know?"
Maybe I should explain the set up of the table more. To my left sat my 2nd cousin, who is about 55 or so and his father, my grandpa's brother. To my right sat my mother and to her right my grandfather (her father). Every time the waitress said anything it was repeated twice on both sides of me to the old men and once the food was brought out, even more complaints. "Wait does this have onions? I forgot to ask the waitress if this has onions. I really hate onions." "Well Dad, you usually ask that at every restaurant, I was surprised you didn't yet." "I forgot to, but are there onions in here? I hate onions." This went on for about 10 minutes with a short reprise of "I'm going to regret those onions" as we left the table and walked outside.
Then there were the really random stories. I know I can be incredibly random to the point of questioning if I have ADD sometimes, but god damn.
In the middle of a conversation on minor strokes and what is considered normal for your average 50 year old today, my great uncle cued in...
"You know I was watching the Tony Awards earlier this week. You know, I don't usually watch those type of things but it was on, for about 2 hours. Well, Angela Lansbury came on. You know she's had a few face lifts. She's been around for a while. She talked about things that have happened with the tony's in the past 40 years. She's been around for a while. Must be about 70 or so."
*Short awkward pause*
"So about that stroke I had, Jan, I talked to a doctor about it and..."

It went on like this. A few questions for them to bring me into the conversation, usually about something I'm involved in at college. *cough*CIRCUS*cough* I just feel so freaked out when I am the youngest at a table by about 35 years. I wouldn't have minded if the conversation was about politics, religion, current events, etc but when everything is about who died recently and their current medical ailments I just get freaked out. I'm young. I would like to enjoy my youth. The constant reminders of what I have to face in the years to come just freak me out (particularly since these people make up part of my gene pool. thanks a lot.)

but who cares about the young folks?

did I mention my new addiction? [03 Jun 2007|11:24pm]
[ mood | cranky ]

Your Score: Zach

You scored 41 Idealism, 66 Nonconformity, 50 Nerdiness

You gotta embrace your inner freak. 'Cause the only thing you'll regret is denying who you really are.
Congratulations, you're Zach! You're nerdy, strange, slightly snarky, and proud of it! You're also a nice guy and really trustworthy friend. Any cheerleader (or, well, anyone) should consider his or herself extremely fortunate to be friends with a person like you. Your best quality: You're an all-around great friend Your worst quality: You don't get along well with annoying little brothers

all weekend i'll be in the city doing model UN stuff and having some fun with good friends.
only I have a paper due on Monday
but hey, its cool
however it is incredibly awkward watching some friends skirt aroudn very obvious issues much alon the lines of a "he likes her, she doesn't like him, she's kinda interested in someone else but can't go there due to someone else" type bull shit.
eh, it'll blow over
and it could be worse.
